Married and Moved: What a Busy Month!
It's always difficult to consistently make blog posts through the warm balmy summer months (in Canada our summer typically lasts for 3 - 4 months), but this summer has been especially busy. Over the past month I've managed to get married, and move across Canada - from Ottawa to Calgary which is about a 2,000 km (1270 miles), a four day drive.

Code Camp in Toronto, are you going?

So what is Code Camp all about?

A Code Camp must follow these rules:
  1. By and For the Developer Community - Code Camps are about the developer community at large. They are meant to be a place for developers to come and learn from their peers. Topics are always based on community interest and never determined by anyone other than the community.
  2. Always Free - Code Camps are always free for attendees.
  3. Community Developed Material - The success of the Code Camps is that they are based on community content. All content that is delivered is original. All presentation content must be provided completely (including code) without any restriction. If you have content you don’t want to share or provide to attendees then the Code Camp is not the place for you.
  4. No Fluff – only Code - Code Camps are about showing the code. Refer to rule #1 if you have any questions on this.
  5. Community Ownership - The most important element of the Code Camp is always the developer community. All are welcome to attend and speak and do so without expectation of payment or any other compensation other than their participation in the community.
  6. Never occur during work hours - We understand that many times people can’t leave work for a day or two to attend training or even seminars. The beauty of the Code Camp is that they always occur on weekends.

If your attending then I'll see you there. :)

Points of Interest: AJAX and ASP.NET "Atlas" - Developer Night in Canada User Group Tour

Points of interest from Microsoft's ATLAS overview (a TechNet event in Ottawa):

MasterPage/ContentPage Scenarios
You can have a ScriptManager on your master pages, but you need a ScriptManagerProxy if you want multiple script or service references in your content page.

Calling external Web Services with ATLAS
... "Atlas" includes bridge technology that enables developers to create gateways (both declaratively and programmatically) to Web services on the Internet. Bridge code runs within the scope of an "Atlas" application, so the browser communicates exclusively with the home server.

Using just the ATLAS JavaScript Collection without the Pane controls
I have a working (hopefully it still works) Accordion Control on my website: http://adam.kahtava.com/professionalDev/reviews/

Ajax alert raises security, scalability issues
... Ajax increases the amount of XML, text or HTML network traffic. Relying on XML as the content type for request/response payloads exposes applications to Web services vulnerabilities …

TechNet Monthly - Developer Night in Canada User Group Tour - AJAX and ASP.NET "Atlas" (Ottawa)
Christian Beauclair gave a great overview of ATLAS (Microsoft’s AJAX framework for ASP.NET 2.0). Christian differentiated between the classic post back paradigm and the AJAXian capabilities that can be achieved through ATLAS. I felt the presentation was a little simplistic, but understand that it was intended to give a broad overview of ATLAS and AJAX.

Christian is an excellent speaker I plan on attending more of his events.

TechNet Monthly - Exchange Server: Exchange 12 Overview (Ottawa)
I attended my first Ottawa TechNet event today where Rick Clause demonstrated the many new features and enhancements of the soon to be released Exchange Server 2007.

I found the following highlights most interesting:
  • The Unified Messaging Communications which allows voicemail and fax to be attached to email messages when integrated with Exchange Server .
  • The introduction of an Edge Server for better communication hygiene, transport, and security control
  • The plethora of commands for the Exchange Management Shell
Rick is an excellent communicator and presenter; I look forward to his future events.
